We also celebrate the Green Point Lighthouse, often mistakenly referred to as the Mouille Point Lighthouse, which is a national heritage site. It was the first solid lighthouse structure on the South African coast and is the oldest operational lighthouse in the country. Designed by Herman Shutte, it took three years to build (1821-23) and was first lit on 12 April 1824.
